Charleston, South Carolina
Rich and Carol visited Charleston in October, 2022.
In addition to touring the picturrsque city, a highlkight was visiting Fort Sumter, the site of the first shots fired in the American Civil War when soldiers of the Confederate States of America fired on the fort on the morning of April 14, 1861, driving the Union soldiers from the fort. Major Robert Anderson took the flag with him on April 13, 1861 when he surrendered Fort Sumter.
In a twist of fate, Anderson returned to the Fort on April 14, 1865, one year and one day from the surrender of the fort and raised the flag previously flown. This fact would have normally been a major news story, however, it was eclipsed by the assignation of Presidat Lincoln on the same day.
