Who is Jesus?
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" Matthew 16:13
Jesus had been preaching and teaching among the people. He had performed miracles and now was walking with His disciples. They came upon an ancient temple dedicated to the pagan god, Pan. He stopped and asked His disciples, “Who do people say I am?”
Did the people recognize Jesus? Did they see Him as the Promised Messiah? Would He be as well known as Pan?
No, people didn’t see Jesus as Messiah, Savior, or Promised One. They thought Him as a special person – maybe a prophet – but nothing more. The people knew prophets, Elijah, Jeremiah, John the Baptist. But they really didn’t see Jesus.
Jesus then asks another question, “Who do you say that I am?” Would the disciples see Jesus as Savior, King of Kings, Promised One, Messiah?
Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
Who is Jesus in your life? Is He another prophet or the Savior? Is He someone that you visit once or twice a year or do you visit with Him daily? Are you sad or happy to go to His house and hear His Word? Do you forget or long to talk to Him? Do you tell Him all of your secrets or try to keep secrets from Him? Is He someone that is always with you? Is He a person of last resort – if all else fails, try Jesus?
I can’t answer the question for you, only for me. For me Jesus is my Best Friend. I talk to Him all day long. Before I teach a class I ask Jesus to give me wisdom. Before I talk to parents, I ask Jesus for guidance. I talk to Him when I drive, when I wake and when I fall to sleep. I am talking to Him now as I write these words; I am asking Him to guide my thoughts so that I will share Him with you.
Jesus is also the measure of my actions. I try to match my words and my actions. This I struggle with – daily. I confess with St. Paul that I don’t always do that which I should. So who is Jesus? He is the one who forgives and gives me another day to live for Him. I live each day for Him until that day when I wake in Heaven. Jesus is my life.
Who is Jesus?
Prayer: Dear Father, let people see Jesus in me. Amen.
