Snow
We were returning to the port of Valdez, Alaska, from our tour of the glaciers. The ship’s captain narrated the tour and was now telling us about the city of Valdez. He pointed out the buildings, the oil terminus, the harbor and the city streets. He also commented about the amount of snow they received during the winter – measured in feet – not inches. As he pointed out the sights he referred to the abandoned cars in the yards of the homes. In the summer they appear as rusted out piles of eyesore. However, in the winter the snow covers them to create beautiful snow sculptures.
The snow fell quietly as we watched from our living room window. Thanksgiving dinner was over, my Mom and Dad were able to visit us to help celebrate the first Thanksgiving of our daughter, Rebecca. After Thanksgiving, my Mom and Bunny took a trip to the Mall while the boys, my Dad and I set out the Christmas decorations in the yard. Now we watched as the snow drifted down on top of the manger and blanketed the Holy Family in white. The lights shone through the layer of snow and created a magical effect. It was beautiful.
As I write this devotion we have snow predicted. I am looking forward to snow. For once the snow comes, I do not have to see the leaves, the fallen branches and the dead flowers that should have been picked up when the weather was nice. It seems as if when the weather is nice enough to clean the yard – it is nice enough to do other things. I welcome the clean blanket of snow. My yard will be transformed from a “mess” to a “bless”-ing. The snow creates beauty.
The snow reminds me of the cleansing of Christ. Scripture tells us, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” Yes, my sins are red – they stand out – they are ugly. The dead leaves, broken braches and trash of my sins create an ugly landscape. But Christ’s blood covers my sins, His blood cleans them – covers them and the ugly landscape is turned beautiful.
As I see the snow, I thank God for His grace – given to me through His Son.
Prayer: Thank You God for snow – thank You for Jesus. Amen.
