The Honeymoon is Over
The marriage ceremony was awesome! After weeks of planning, spending, calling and shopping, the wedding day is over. The messages were inspiring, the music uplifting; the dresses magnificent, the tuxes even fit. No one passed out and the sun shone all day. The girls looked beautiful in their make-up, hair-do’s and polished nails. The bride was stunning – breath-taking as she entered the church. A collective gasp from the congregation announced her beauty as she walked down the aisle to her smiling husband-to-be. The rings sparkled as the newly formed family exited the church.
The reception was outstanding! The food, the friends, the laughter, the joy, the prayers, the well-wishes, the gifts, the greetings, the music, the drinks, the excitement, the happiness, the sunshine are all memories – happy memories. The most precious memory is the joy of a family gathered to celebrate the creation of a new family – a husband and wife – united in Christ – guided by Christ.
The honeymoon was unforgettable! Two weeks in Hawaii is always an anticipated destination. Even with two weeks of record setting rain, the island state is special. The glow of two newlyweds pierced the cloudy days and brought smiles to all who witnessed the happy couple. The rain did not dampen the enthusiasm, the hiking, the appreciation of God’s beautiful Creation. The waterfalls pounded as the rain-swollen rivers cascaded over rocks into thirsty valleys. Rainbows announced a promise. The rare days of sunshine were experienced with gusto – swimming, snorkeling, hiking, body surfing, helicopter riding and sunbathing.
The Honeymoon allowed us to develop a very close relationship, a time to play, a time to learn, a time to grow our love for one another, a time to celebrate. Now the honeymoon is over. It is back to work – back to the “real world,” back to bills, back to phone calls, back to problems, back to time issues, back to alarm clocks, back to building our lives together.
I can empathize with the disciples of Jesus. As they entered Jerusalem for the last time, they had the feeling that the “honeymoon” was over. There was something different about the relationship Jesus had with the crowds, the Pharisees, the detractors. There was somberness, seriousness to all that He did. The disciples could feel it – things were changing.
Yes, the “honeymoon” was over. The Disciples had their time to develop a close relationship, time to play, to grow in love for one another. Soon Jesus would die on the cross – suffer the torment meant for me – for us. Soon Jesus would leave them. He would place them in the “real world.” This world is filled with troubles, trials, problems. They would be tempted to say, “The Honeymoon is over.”
The Good News is that Jesus is with us – now! He is still with us – loving us, playing with us, celebrating with us!
Prayer, Thank you, Jesus, for Your great love! Amen.
