What Is Your Favorite Food?
Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. – John 21 12-13
The disciples spent the night on the Sea of Galilee. They watched as Jesus was arrested, hid as He was tried and mourned their loss. They rejoiced when He appeared to them in the Upper Room and were searching as they spent the night on the lake – fishing.
They caught no fish. But then the next morning they saw a fire on the shore, a Man and some food. Jesus made breakfast for them. They ate and were happy.
I like food. I like lots of different types of food – American, Italian, Mexican, German, Athabascan, and most others. Food is my friend. Certain foods have very powerful memories for me. Turkey, sage stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, sweet potatoes, and mince meat pie bring back happy memories of the family gathered together around the Thanksgiving table – eating, laughing, and sharing.
“Pigs feet and sauerkraut,” answered Mom every time we begged to know what was for supper. (Bunny made it and it is good!)
Boston cream pie is my traditional birthday cake. Mom would make it for me, Bunny would make it for me, and my children make it for me now. Once a year I eat a special dessert and think back over the decades about all of the other times we gathered for the birthday celebration.
Pizza, crab legs, Chinese, and Spaghetti with Browned Butter and Mizithra Cheese were some of Bunny’s favorites. Every time the family eats one of “her” foods, we are reminded of the wonderful times we had together.
Food is more than nourishment. Food is tradition, fun, family and festivities. Some of the happiest memories I have of family revolve around meals. Church meals gather the family of God to share and make memories.
One of the most powerful meals I eat is the Lord’s Supper. His body and Blood may not nourish my physical body, but it strengthens my soul – giving me forgiveness of sin.
What is your favorite food? How does God feed your soul?
Prayer: Thank you God for daily food, for friends and for forgiveness. Amen
