It Rained
What a great morning it was. I snuggled under the covers as the cool air from the window blew across the bed. The sound of the gentle rain falling rhythmically on the roof soothed my busy mind, allowing me to relax. The clean, fresh smell wafting through the window reminded me of days when my Mom would bring the laundry in from the outside line and I would bury my head in the sheets – inhaling the powerful smell of clean.
The birds busily chatting in the trees urged me to awake. I plodded to the window and looked over the glistening grass, wet from the rain. The sun began to shine, creating brilliant patterns as the light reflected off of each drop of moisture. The deer in the field bounded through the high grass, on their way to find food, a drink, and a safe place to rest. My heart filled with joy as God unveiled His wonderful creation through my bedroom window.
Soon it was time for me to head out the door. The beauty of the day soon turned as the truck splashed through the puddles, sending globs of mud and dirt on the windshield. Wipers streaked the mess across the window, clouding the vision. The splashes of the cars soon covered the remaining clean areas of the truck with a layer of grim. The sunshine reflected across the streaks of the windshield, obscuring vision and causing tension.
The beauty of the day – the peace of the morning was shattered by the reality of dirt, grim and mud.
Soon my thoughts turned to the day ahead. There promised to be more times of stress, difficulties and jobs that would go unfilled. Tension and unease lay just on the horizon. By the time my head would hit the pillow many troubles and trials would be endured – some passing quickly, others to linger and fester for another day.
Then God broke through my thoughts and I could feel His peace surround me. Yes, the trials and tribulations of this life are many. Yes, the hurts will come and go. Yes, people will disappoint. Yes, tasks will seem overwhelming. Yes, the dirt, grim and mud of life will be tossed all over me.
Yet I will remember the rain. The cleansing – life-giving waters that God provides. The calming waters – the soothing waters. Yes, the rain reminds me of the waters of baptism. My baptism connects me to God. My baptism seals me as a son of my Heavenly Father. My baptism gives forgiveness of sins by the power of the Holy Spirit. My baptism allows me to take my troubles – my hurts – my pains – my sufferings – my trials and give them all to my Heavenly Father. He stands ready to strengthen – to renew – to lift up – to encourage. He hugs me with His heavenly arms and I feel safe – I feel loved – I feel OK.
When I see the rain, I am thankful – God is loving me.
Prayer – Thank You God for making me Your child. Amen.
