Living Water
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” – John 4:10
Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. The disciples went on to buy food and Jesus was left alone with this woman. She was outcast by the women in the town for her sins. She was at the well alone – alone with her pain, her disgrace, her life.
Jesus approached her – talked to her. That in itself was unusual for two reasons – men did not talk to unaccompanied women and Jews did not talk to Samaritans. But talk Jesus did. They had a good conversation. They talked about water and soon they were talking about salvation. Jess asked her for a drink – then ended up offering her His living water.
I remember that story whenever I am in a rainstorm. The water comes down from heaven and washes away the dirt and the grim – leaving the world a cleaner place. I love to lie in bed at night and listen to the rhythm of the falling rain. I snuggle under the blankets and hear God’s lullaby. The water gives green to the plants – gives life to the animals – washes the air clean. The rain comforts, cleans, and gives life.
The Samaritan woman was offered the Living Water of Jesus. We are given the Living Water of Jesus in our baptism. The baptismal waters wash away the sin from our souls. The Holy Spirit covers us in faith. We are given the Living Water of salvation through faith in Christ. This is an awesome gift!
No matter what the sorrows we face on earth, no matter what the trials we face on earth, no matter what the pain we suffer on earth – we have the hope of eternal life in heaven – free from sorrows, free from trails, free from suffering. The Living Water of Jesus washes that away!
The Samaritan woman ran back to her town and shouted the news of Jesus. She was so insistent that the townspeople come and see, that they did. They saw Jesus and were given the Living Water of faith. She shared Jesus with those who had cast her out.
Should we not do the same? Can we not share the Good News of the Living Water of Jesus with all those whom we meet? What an awesome thing to be able to share Jesus! Wouldn’t it be tremendous if someone would thank us for introducing them to Jesus?
Let us share the Living Water with those who need to drink.
Prayer – Thank You, Jesus, for our baptism, our washing and for the gift of heaven. Help us to share this news with all we see. Amen.
