Tiny Town
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
- Genesis 1:26-27
The sounds of the children laughing beckoned us to come and play. We sat at the breakfast table and had our bowels of cereal, glasses of milk and lots of laughter. Yes, the grandchildren were as delighted to see us as we were to see them. We laughed, we played, we enjoyed each other’s company. Soon Momma entered the room and asked, “Would you like to visit Tiny Town?”
“Yeah,” the cheers made it unanimous, off to Tiny Town!
Lunches were packed, the stroller folded into the back of the car and the diaper bag filled with the necessities for travel with a three and a one year old. O’Pa, Grandma Carol, Lori, Abby and Noah were off on an adventure.
The highway climbed into the mountains, the car curving and swerving as altitude was gained. Soon the green highway sign was spotted “Tiny Town, Next Left.” Abby sat up in her car seat, straining to see the Promised Land. Noah continued his “car nap.” (It is always better to let sleeping baby boys lay.)
We parked the car, unloaded the provisions and grabbed hands for the walk to the entrance.
Tiny Town was begun in 1915 as a Father built 1/6th scale sized houses for his daughter’s amusement. Over the years many more toddler sized houses were erected and a railroad line was built for the kid’s enjoyment. Today Tiny Town has neighborhoods of houses, some to look at, some to crawl into, a railroad with four locomotives, a scaled down playground, refreshments and souvenirs.
Grandmas and Grandpas bring their grandbabies, Moms and Dads their children, to walk the streets, play in the houses and ride the train. Hundreds of preschoolers spend hours in a world that is built just for them.
Abby loved the windmill, Noah the slide and O’Pa the train – he had to ride it three times! It is a very special place for children – their own little world – no straining to see beyond kneecaps here!
Walking the streets of Tiny Town reminds one of the very special love a Father had for his little girl – he loved her so much that he built a town just for her. One is also reminded of the love of another Father – our Father in Heaven.
For He loved us so much that He created a whole world – a whole universe – just for His children. It didn’t take too many turns of the mountain road to comprehend the vastness, the greatness, the beauty of the earth that He created for us. The majestic peaks, soaring pine trees, rushing rivers, powerful waterfalls all are but brief glimpses of the wonders He created. Elk, buffalo, deer, and the multitude of birds reminds us of how He populated the world – all for us.
His world is an awesome creation – always pointing to the Creator. Each rock, each blade of grass, every animal all take their place in His creation – revealing the complexity yet simplicity of the universe. Each creation serves its Master’s purpose.
As we drove home and gazed into the sleeping face of the baby, one could not help but marvel at another world God has prepared for us. Yes, Heaven is beyond anything we can grasp now. We can see glimpses of Heaven – the baby’s smile of love at his Mommy, the view from the top of the mountain, a rushing waterfall, the sleek lines of a deer running through a stream, the locked eyes of two lovers stopping time to drink in each other’s features and the refreshing breeze of a gentle rain as it cools the drought parched earth. Yet, all of these temporary glimpses pale when one contemplates the majesty and glory of our eternal home – eternal joy in the sight of God – our Father – our Creator – our Sustainer.
Once a Grandparent visits Tiny Town He becomes a messenger of the news – “Go and visit – it is awesome!” Once a Christian sees Heaven – she becomes a messenger of the news – “Come and see – hear the Good News – our Father wishes all to be in His creation – Heaven.”
Let us pray for those who have dedicated their lives to the proclamation of Heaven’s joys for all – let us pray that we proclaim – “Come and meet my Savior – your Savior – come and see Heaven.”
