Follow Me
“Come, follow me," Jesus said.
-Mark 1:17
John the Baptist had just been arrested and Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. The Sea of Galilee is a picturesque land – lots of trees, lots of green. It is filled with fruit trees, olive trees, and is very peaceful. It is a very relaxing walk along the shore – a time to reflect and meditate on one’s future.
As Jesus came to the shore, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea. They were fishermen. They made their living by catching and selling fish. It was a hard life, one filled with long hours and little monetary reward. However, they were happy in their craft. They owned nets, they had a business, they were doing fine for their lot in life.
Jesus approached and said, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
I often wonder what they were thinking when they heard Jesus call to them. Some might say that they wondered, “Who is this Man that we should follow Him?” Some might speculate that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized that Jesus was the Savior and He was calling them to a position that was more important than fishing. I tend to think the later.
I would like to think that their hearts were filled with a burning, their stomachs a little uneasy and they were excited. The Lord had called them into service. He promised that they would be fishers of men. No where in the Scripture does it mention that Jesus gave them a job description, indicating what it meant to be a fisher of men. I like to think that the future disciples knew instantly that this was a day that would change their life – for eternity!
Jesus comes to us – now and tells us, “Come, follow me.” The future disciples heard the Calling, and left their nets to follow Jesus. Do we? Can we say that we leave behind our worried, our plans for the future, our comfortable life and follow Jesus? Can we find the joy in service that the disciples felt? Can we reach out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and be fishers of men?
It is very hard, but easy at the same time. We often fear speaking out for Christ. We fear rejection, being made fun of, or having other people think badly of us. Yet, it is very easy, for God gives us the courage, the power and the words. All we have to do is speak up – God takes care of the rest.
Young children, grade school children, high school children, young adults and older adults can each speak out – stand up – for Christ in words and deeds. We can “Follow Him.”
Prayer:
Lord, let me follow You today. Amen.
