Can I Afford a Lutheran School?
During National Lutheran Schools Week we celebrate many aspects of Lutheran education. We celebrate the comprehensive nature of our educational system – The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod offers educational opportunities from birth to post graduate college level. We celebrate the opportunities given for students to grow in knowledge – with students excelling in school and in their work places. We celebrate with the students as they grow in their knowledge of God. We especially celebrate with the students as they grow in their relationship with God. We rejoice when students are baptized into the family of Christ. We celebrate and mourn when family members are called home to heaven – celebrate their victory and mourn their earthly parting. We cheer when our students perform on the sports field. We cheer when our students sing praises to God. We cheer when our students make mighty music with their instruments. We applaud their efforts – always thanking God, the Creator and Gifter of their gifts.
We have much to celebrate during Lutheran Schools Week. Lutheran Schools are committed to excellence in all things. So what does a Lutheran Education cost? We know what we get in return for our money, but how much does this quality education cost?
Every Lutheran school operates in the most efficient way possible. Lutheran teachers receive a lower rate of salary than their public school counterparts. Buildings, furniture and equipment is kept in good repair – eliminating costly replacements and extending the budgeted dollar. All school budgets are carefully scrutinized for excess. No expenditure is taken lightly, from buying paper clips to building buildings. Lutheran schools joyfully operate to get the most benefit from the dollar.
The cost to educate one child at Our Savior based upon last year’s numbers and enrollment figures averaged around the $4,000.00 mark. For each child who is a member of Our Savior over 70% of the costs were paid by the congregation. The cost to the member averages about $10 per school day or $50 per school week or $5 per day spread over a n entire year. That is a significant price in terms of discretionary income, however, it is an investment in the potential earning power of the child, an investment in the stability of the family and an investment in the eternal life of the child.
It is the goal of all at Our Savior that no child shall be denied an education based on finances alone. I will work with any family to help insure that they can afford Our Savior for their children. Can you afford Our Savior? I pray you can.
