Downtown

It was a Saturday evening in November and I was struggling to finish my Freshmen English assignment. I had to write a theme and the high school teacher was a lot stricter than the eighth grade English teacher.
I had my radio on and was trying to concentrate when Petula Clark’s song Downtown came on.
I heard “When you are alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go – downtown” and started thinking.I felt lonely, and life was getting me down.
I told my parents that I needed to take a walk and headed to our town’s “downtown” – the intersection of two highways – about a six block walk.
I went to the Standard station – it had a snack bar with some booths. I bought a coke and some chips and watched the cars go by on the highway.
I started thinking about the theme I had to write. I was able to unblock the writer’s block and returned home to finish the theme.
I forget the topic, but I did get a good grade, thanks to Petula.
