Follow Me to My Father’s House
The road was dark, the headlights lighting a dim path in front of the car. I focused on only one thing, the two pinpoints of red lights in front of me. Carol was in front, leading the way. We were on our way to her father’s house. He lives in the country. His driveway is obscured by large bushes and trees. His driveway is hard to find in the daylight, difficult at night and next to impossible at night in low visibility. The only way to find her father’s house was to follow the person who knew the way – to stay as close to her as possible and to do exactly as she did. Soon the lights flashed bright, she slowed and turned. I slowed, turned and there we were – at her father’s house. Dad greeted us warmly at the door.
Is that not how we journey through life? Our destination is our Father’s house – heaven. For most of our life the way to our Father’s house is clear – we know what we have to do – where we must go. But along comes worries, doubts and fears and the way gets more obscure. We doubt, turn aside, get detoured and have trouble seeing which way we must go. Then there are the times in our lives when the path is the darkest. A beloved family member is called home to heaven, money is scarce and bills are plentiful, illness saps our energy, our home is torn from us by flood, wind, or fire. We may lose a job, self, esteem, or hope for the future. It is at these times we must follow someone who knows the way to avoid being totally lost.
That someone we must follow is Jesus. He is always with us and He reaches out to us in our times of hopelessness, despair and doubt with the words, “Follow Me to My Father’s house.” He leads us on the way. All we have to do is keep our eyes focused on Him, stay as close to Him as we can, and do exactly as He does. Soon we will reach His Father’s house, our Father’s house.
How can we see Jesus? We see Him in the Bible. As we read the Bible we can see Jesus, hear Jesus and find the path to our Father’s house. We also see Jesus when we go to church, Bible class and Sunday school. The pastor, teachers and leaders show us Jesus in the Bible and through the discussion. We can also see Jesus in the lives of the people around us. I can see Jesus in Carol. She lives her life as a disciple of Jesus. Her life is one of service to Jesus. Her words and actions point me to her heavenly Father’s house. If I stay close to her, do as she does – I will arrive at our Father’s house – to be greeted by our heavenly Father,
Others can see Jesus in you. You can lead family members, friends and all those who see you to your Father’s house.
Prayer: “Give me the courage to lead others to my Father’s house.” Amen
