Lutheran Schools – Just for Lutherans?
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod first established Lutheran schools to teach the Lutheran faith, teach the German language, and provide training for the children. That was in 1846.
Today Lutheran schools still teach the Lutheran faith and provide training for the children. Gone are the days when the Lutheran church speaks and conducts business in German. Today The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod reaches out with welcome arms to any and all who would come to us. The doors of Our Savior Lutheran are open for all.
But what about that Lutheran faith teaching – does that mean that if a child enters a Lutheran school then he or she will have to be a Lutheran? The answer is no. We unashamedly teach children the Lutheran faith. The faith we teach is this: the Bible is God’s inspired Word, Jesus suffered, died, was buried and rose again on Easter morning to pay for our sins, salvation is a free gift of God, nothing we do can save us from our sins, we need to pray, praise and give back to God, we worship a Triune God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and there are two sacraments – baptism and Holy Communion.
All children are taught according to their age appropriate learning capabilities. Our younger children are taught simple Bible stories and the Lord’s Prayer. As the students progress in the grades they are taught more Bible stories, prayers, creeds, etc. Once instructed, children are offered the opportunity to be Confirmed in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, not forced to join.
That is a very long answer to say, “All children are invited and welcome at Our Savior. We will love them as Christ loves us. We will share the saving news that Jesus loves them. We will read the Bible with them and pray with them.”
