How Can This Be?
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel. . . Luke 1: 34
Yes, how can this be? Mary was told that she would conceive and have a baby – a boy – a Savior. How can this be? She is not married – she is a virgin! A miracle!
Have you had a miracle in your life? I have. There was the miracle of safety when I was a child. I was walking with my Dad on the wooden steps behind the American Falls at Niagara. Being the typical third grader, I was three steps ahead of Dad as we climbed. My foot slipped and I started to fall between the rails – I was much thinner then. I felt a strong hand grab my wrist and pull me up onto the steps. I was safe. When I looked around, Dad was still two steps behind me. I could see no one close – that was a miracle.
I have witnessed miracles four times in my family. Each of my four children were cleansed under the waters of Baptism. God’s Word spoken combined with the water changed my children – forever! They received the power of the Holy Spirit, forgiveness of sins and were claimed as children of our Heavenly Father. That is an awesome miracle!
I see the miracles – daily! I have Kindergarten students who learn to read. I have eighth grade students solve quadratic equations. I watch as awkward boys and girls run with grace and poise – dribbling a basketball down a gym floor. I listen to the Pre-school kids recite the Lord’s Prayer. I stand in awe at the miracles that surround me.
We sometimes wonder how Mary could have doubted the announcement – for she was talking to Gabriel – an angel sent from God. Angel – a messenger – sent to proclaim God’s Word!
Today we are God’s angels – for today we are proclaiming God’s Word to our students – we are proclaiming God’s Word to our spouses – we are proclaiming God’s Word to each other. It is awesome to be used as God’s angel to proclaim God’s miracles to those we meet. Mary understood that when she said - "I am the Lord's servant." She was empowered by the Holy Spirit. Yes, and we are, too.
Prayer: Thank you God for letting us be Your angels today. Amen
