I'm Busy
I am busy. I awake each morning and I know what it is that I want to accomplish for the day. My “to do” list divides itself into items that must be accomplished today, items I want to accomplish today, items I have put off from the past and need to accomplish today and items I plan to do for the future. Each day is an exciting adventure as I plan my day’s activities – everything has a place and everything will be done.
Then I get out of bed. The real world crashes in on me and I discover that those things that I want to do, that I do not, and the things I do not want to do, that I do. I am inundated with requests, responsibilities and the unforeseen crisis’s that strike and divert me from doing that which I want or need to accomplish. Oftentimes I am in a panic mode, trying to prioritize each event, each task, to determine that which I should do first and best.
The net result is that when I rest my head on the pillow for the evening, not all of the tasks I desired to have accomplished are – and I have added a number of items to tomorrow’s list. I am busy.
I do not mind being busy – I went through a recent time when all I was able to do was sit in a chair – and that with difficulty. So, I relish the fact that I am able to be busy. What bothers me is that by being busy I take time away from Bible study and prayer.
Some may read that last sentence and ask, “So what?”
The “so what” is that I need to take time each day to read the Bible and talk with my Father in heaven. It is in the words of eternal life found in the scriptures that I find a peace that calms me for the activities of the day, words of comfort for the trials of the day, and hope for a sin-sick world. I need to hear God speak to me in the words of the Bible in the same way I need food for my body.
I also need to spend time talking back to my Father. I need to share with Him my desires for the day, my requests for me and those whom I love, and to praise Him for His actions in my life. Not talking to God is like not talking to my best friend.
We all are busy – we all have uncrossed “to do” items on our list. Let us put God first – let us take time to hear Him speak to us – let us take time to respond to Him. The time we spend with God will be the best time of the day.
In my opinion.
