Lesson Four - Current Lutheran Mission Work in Thailand
Current Lutheran mission work in Thailand
Lesson Focus:
This lesson will focus on the current work of the Lutheran Hour Ministries and
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in Bangkok.
Lesson Objectives:
1. The children will learn about the presence of Lutheran Hour Ministries in Thailand.
2. The children will be able to name two or three ways in which the Lutheran Church is helping in Thailand.
3. The children will help pack boxes of supplies to be shipped to Thailand.
Materials Needed:
1. Thai girl and Thai boy puppets (previously made)
2. materials for packing the “By Kids…For Kids”—Thailand boxes
Background for the teacher:
There are approximately 607,000 Christians in Thailand. Of this number, there are approximately 303,500 Protestants, 300,500 Roman Catholics, and 1,700 Lutherans (two bodies).
The Concordia Gospel Mission is training Thai lay leaders to help them in planting an indigenous Thai church. At a camp held in Pattaya, Thailand, sponsored by the Mission, Dr. Jeffrey Ehlers met a young Thai man, a well-educated civil engineer, who said, “This is the first time ever I have really heard about Jesus and about God.”
Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are used to develop relationships and as an avenue for an introduction to Christianity through the materials used. A social welfare-evangelistic program called “The House of Living Water” is also supported in Concordia Gospel Mission’s target area in the northwestern area of urban Bangkok. This house seeks to serve teenage girls who have been abused. Concordia Day Care Center is giving help to families in a local slum area and is instrumental in providing clean clothing, food, and immunizations to children, as well as daytime care. Work is also being carried on near a Bangkok university campus using programs of instruction in the English language, cultural exchanges, and sports participation as means for evangelistic outreach.
Six Lutheran Hour radio stations weekly proclaim the Gospel to approximately 100 listeners. One thousand people have enrolled in or have completed Bible correspondence courses.
Lesson Content:
Our Lutheran Church is trying to reach Thai people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ by meeting some of their physical, social, and educational needs. Caring for children, providing food and clothing, teaching English, and broadcasting “The Lutheran Hour” through six radio stations are some of the ways our church is hoping to open doorways to communicating to others that Jesus is their Lord and Savior.
Lesson Approach:
Bring Sumaree and Jaran (previously made puppets) back one last time. Use the following script, adapting as desired.
Jaran: (jumping up and down) Hurrah! Hurrah! Today’s the day!
Sumaree: Jaran, why are you so excited?
Jaran: I just can’t wait!
Sumaree: Wait? Wait for what?
Jaran: Haven’t you heard? Today the boys and girls are going to pack the boxes.
Sumaree: Boxes? What boxes?
Jaran: Boxes filled with pens and pencils and scissors and paper and a toy!
Sumaree: What for?
Jaran: They’re sending them to our friends and relatives in Thailand.
Sumaree: Wow!
Jaran: And you know what else?
Sumaree: Is there more?
Jaran: Oh, yes! Lots more! When the boxes are delivered in Thailand, the boys and girls will also get a bag with a cup and a toothbrush and toothpaste and some sandals and a school notebook and more!
Sumaree: This is great!
Jaran: And I’ve been saving the best for last.
Sumaree: There’s more?
Jaran: Oh, yes! There will be a Bible storybook and a coloring book telling all about Jesus in every bag.
Sumaree: You mean they will get to hear about the same Jesus you told me about yesterday?
Jaran: That’s right!
Sumaree: the Jesus who died to take away our sins and lives to take us to heaven?
Jaran: Right again!
Sumaree: So if they don’t hear it on the radio and they don’t hear about it in their English classes, they can read the Good News about Jesus in their very own Bible story books?
Jaran: That’s Lutheran Hour Ministries plan!
Sumaree: Let’s celebrate!
Take time to sing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and add, “He’s got boys and girls in Thailand in His hands.”

Review:
- What are some ways in which our church is trying to help the Thai people? Providing food, clothing, taking care of children, teaching English, telling about Jesus on the radio
- Where are our boxes being sent? Thailand
- What are some of the things in the boxes? Paper, pens, scissors, toys
- What will the children get in Thailand from Lutheran Hour Ministries? Toothbrushes, toothpaste, cups, notebooks
- What is the best gift they will get in their bag? A Bible story book about Jesus
Extending the Lesson:
- Make a computer generated banner in block print or stencil on Posterboard with the following message: JESUS LOVES ALL THE CHILDREN IN THE WORLD Let the children take turns coloring the letters. Display in the hallway or in the classroom.
- Learn some Thai words. See blackline master.
- Make Thai eggrolls. I have made these with preschool/kindergartne/early elementary grades for almost twenty years, ever since a Thai mother of one of my preschoolers taught me. The children catch on to rolling them rather quickly and some don’t want to quit. We have already made two to three hundred eggrolls in a morning and shared them with the entire school. Great ending for a Thailand unit! See blackline for recipe and instructions.
