Election Day
Election Day “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.” – Matthew 24-30-31
I can remember a time when I saw my Dad wear a button on his suit coat – it proclaimed, “I Like Ike.” I was old enough to ask him questions such as, “What is an Ike?” but young enough to not understand his answer. Politics and elections meant very little to me at that time.
Then there was a time when I attended my first political rally and listened to a young candidate called John F. Kennedy. After his speech, he was whisked away to his waiting car. As he passed by me, I was able to reach out my hand and pat him on the back. When I shared with my Dad what I had done, he promptly placed a Nixon poster in his living room window.
When I was in college, I decided that I would try my hand at running for a political office. I campaigned to be elected as the “Student Academic Life Officer” for Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois. I made posters, recruited votes and ended up winning the election. It was fairly easy to win, since I was the only candidate. My year of serving as an elected officer confirmed the fact that politics is best left to those who really wish to hold office.
Now that we have lived through another election cycle, we can sit back and reflect about the past and speculate about the future. Every time there is an election, there is a winner and at least one loser. The loser must accept the will of the voters; the winner must determine the will of the voters. Life will get more complicated for those elected; now they must follow through on promises and answer the questions of all.
There is another election in which we all are winners! That election is the one that happened when we were chosen – elected – by the power of the Holy Spirit. We were made heirs of the Kingdom – children of our Heavenly Father. There will come the day when Christ will return and gather His elected from all ends of the earth to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the best news we can have. Every one of us has won – not by campaigning, not by popular vote – but through the Body and Blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Now it is our turn to share this news with all those that we meet. We have the power to share this message with all. Lets us share.
Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for choosing us. Help us share with all we meet. Amen.
