Juarez Cross
From 1997 – 2004 Rich was Manager of North American Volunteer Opportunities for Lutheran Hour Ministries. One aspect of this position was to work with Ysleta Lutheran Mission headquartered out of San Pablo Lutheran Church, El Paso, Texas.
Rich’s duties included site visits, placing volunteers, distributing humanitarian aid and giving encouragement to the workers in the field.
Rich made a number of trips to El Paso and was shown the mission field by Rev. Carl Heimer and his family.
On one trip to Anapra and Zaragoza, Pastor Heimer stopped in Juarez so Rich could purchase some items from the local market.
One of the stalls featured handcrafted wooden crosses made by the owner of the shop. He explained that this cross was made so that the top would slide off, revealing a place to store things. He suggested this cross was made for a pastor to use as a portable communion set, with the wafers carried inside the cross. (That is probably not true, but made for a good story.)
Rich purchased the cross and now it hangs on the wall, reminding all of the love of Christ that reaches into such poverty stricken areas as Anapra and Zaragoza, Mexico.
